FISA: Your Silent, Always Watching Best Friend
You may not have heard because it’s not really being covered by the news, but the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act has been passed! And – this is the awesome part – telecom immunity.
That means that corporations and the government can watch what you do without being held responsible. Which means your safety is always secure. Because who gives a shit about those other people, right? You’ve got nothing to hide and 9/11 was really scary.
If you’re reading this US Government – and I know you are since I just Googled “Terrorist Child Porn Gay Black People” – I’ve got some advertising pitches which might help the few doubting Thomases realize that FISA is meant to protect innocent people from themselves, not hurt them.
Here we go:
Call me, Uncle Sam. You already know the number.

Umm.... are you sure about that?
Oops! Fixed. Thank you.
That was both very funny and yet sad! I hope your generation does more than take the piss. He who has the most gold makes the rules and causes the chaos but he who knows the best tech can put these guys to rest! When the 60's kids tried to change things - 'they' brought in drugs. Your gen ... Sex and a Gucci bag with iPhone. Remember.... you will probably have kids yourself, so hope you gen get really serious on the next election.

Oh Yes, here's one I'd like to see...
Because FISA cares... Random Anonymous Sex will never haunt you again, we KNOW who fathered your child, the Pornographic pics he sent of you to his friends camera Phone are attached to your permanent record, his permanent record and the permanent record of everybody the pics were forwarded to (128 people by the end of the first week and doubling daily). To ensure your privacy your record can only be accessed by the NSA, FBI, CIA, Federal Marshals, State/City and Local Law Enforcement Agencies, Independent Contractors and the Press who may succeed in obtaining the Pics through the Freedom of Information Act (as the Father of your son doesn't compromise national security so we have no reason to deny them access). Share your most intimate moments with a friend you can trust - FISA
lulz. but seriously, a lot of you are taking it too far. you're going for the worst possible extreme that can occur with fisa. this will not occur without rampant abuse. they aren't after you, you idiots. they don't care about you. they don't know who you are, they don't care and don't want to know or care. it just for a legal basis to monitor someone SUSPICIOUS without having to go get a warrant because it's hard to corrupt the courts, so just make it possible to go around them. and start shutting the fuck up.
"hey aren't after you, you idiots."
how, exactly, do you know that? if they were I would be unable to tell you...that would be illegal. They would be unwilling to tell you, and you could be arrested if you happened to find out.
once they have the right to listen to whatever they want, without telling anyone who or why they are doing it...how can we possibly know who they are after?
"lulz. but seriously, a lot of you are taking it too far."
learn 2 read the constitution
"learn 2 read the constitution"
You'll find the constitution under the kitty litter tray
I hate shitty logic. Then if we're not the ones they are after then they shouldn't need the right to observe our communication records without cause.
And remember, they had intelligence prior to 9/11 that was ignored. This is now public record, not me being a conspiracy theorist.
"they aren't after you, you idiots."
I don't know about you but with all the drug peddling and terrorism ive been foster, yes, I'm pretty sure they are after me.
"it just for a legal basis to monitor someone SUSPICIOUS without having to go get a warrant because it's hard to corrupt the courts, so just make it possible to go around them."
Well if the courts are really free from corruption, they'll strike this act down, as it goes against our rights to privacy granted in the Constitution.
Mike, you made the front page of reddit....not bad.
Graeme... Field? Where you been, brother?
Potential for abuse for corruption never goes unfulfilled.
J. Edgar Hoover did some interesting investigations prior to todays high tech. Frank church uncovered some of them in a later congressional investigation.
It is going to be much tougher to run for office if FISA has a record of all sent emails,(recorded calls too?). Imagine the Daniel Ellsburgh dilemna in todays connected and recorded society.
Is it possible Eliot Spitser or Larry Craig are related to this?
You'd think if they were listening to all of us, the unemployment rate would be bit lower. Takes a lot people to man/woman those headphones.
And hey, don't worry Middle-class white people working mind-numbing jobs, occasionally getting drunk and maybe renting porn once in a while - nah, they have no interest in you. But the minute you buy some radical literature at Barnes & Noble - BAM! They'll be on ya. ;-)
Okay, listen up(!) anyone who doesn't believe the gov't will use FISA to hurt U.S. citizens;
I'm an old guy and I remember J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI, monitoring people and not just w/ wiretaps either. He then compiled lists and blackmailed folks left and right, and this was well into the Nixon administration. It was low-tech but very effective. That can't/won't happen again? GET A CLUE. IT IS HAPPENING. You don't think there's ANY potential for abuse? Why do you think Pelosi said "impeachment is off the table?" Why do you think the dems caved on FISA? They already have DIRT on these folks from the (previously)illegal spying! Why do you think they wanted immunity for the telcos?! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!
The government won't be interested in you until you start protesting what they're doing. It's also unconstitutional to force protesters to leave the scene of a political event, but the Bush administration does it regularly. Now only administration-selected out-of-the-way parts of America are "free speech zones." Little by little, the light dims...
This has an all too familiar a feel to it for me. Takes me back to the spring of 1970, when students, both college and high school, across the US were protesting the invasion of Cambodia by shutting their schools down through student strikes. In my city, Portland, Oregon, we shut down almost all of the high schools and some of the universities.
Out of those efforts came a grass roots idea to hold a 3 day event/ demonstration/teach-in, to coincide with the American Legion's Annual Convention, which was being held at the end of August that year, in Portland. Richard Nixon was the scheduled key note speaker.
We decided to call our event, The People's Army Jamboree. We were a citizen army attempting to educate people about the lies being told to them about the Vietnam war and other treacherous acts of our government.
We were absolutely non-violent and only advocated legal acts that of course are protected under the US Constitution!
But somehow, we awoke the powers that be to full alarm. Those radicals in Portland must be stopped!
I was tailed by the FBI and Portland Police. They were oh so obvious in their green cars! The FBI also paid a visit to my parents. I was only 16 years old at the time.
They tried to scare my parents into stopping me from continuing in the steering committee for our Jamboree.
"Your daughter is doing something very dangerous here!" "She could get herself arrested!" "She's associating with people of very questionable character!"
But, my parents were not easily scared by such actions. You see, my father's parents had been card carrying members of the Communist Party since the 1920's and had helped get people out of the US, who were being hounded by the FBI and the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, in the 50's. The FBI paid many visits to my grandparent's raspberry farm in NW Washington state in the 1950's. This was old hat in my family.
My parents asked, "Is she doing anything illegal?" The answer was. . . "Well, no she isn't."
Then my parents asked, "Well, if she is not breaking the law, why should we stop her and why are you harrassing us?"
I continued to be followed until after the Jamboree, but no more visits to the parents.
Spying sucks, whether you can see them or not!
Today, they would just read your emails and follow your movements with a GPS device on your car or somethiing equally nasty. You probably would never see or hear a thing. In 1970, we just assumed all our phones were tapped. Now, everyone can have that same comfort of knowing that Big Bro is watching them.
Oh, and by the way, we did scare Richard Nixon into cancelling his appearance. He sent Spiro Agnew instead.
Also, if anyone ever tells you they went to the rock festival called Vortex I, you know they were at an event planned by the Governor of Oregon to co-opt us by drawing young people away from Portland for the 3 days of the Peoples' Army Jamboree! They broke plenty of laws there. All drugs and associated activities were legal for the whole festival. Imagine that! We were legal and nonviolent. Vortex was full of state sanctioned law breaking! What the Vortex attendees didn't know was that the Governor had State National Guard troops close by the Vortex site, to stop them if they tried to leave in mass to attend the Jamboree! Even rock festivals can be compromised!
The stuff happening now isn't new, just new technology.
Be vigilant people!
I find it interesting that today's FISA legislation was orchestrated by the same republicanists who back in the 90's were whining about "big government". The "big government" complaint seemed to resonate with most conservatives who's only purpose in DC was total annihilation of any, and all, functioning socialist programs in America. Why do republicanists hate people?! What did we ever do to them? Money is the problem. There is too much money to be made in the way things are. For example. The insurance companies got their hooks into America after the second world war, and they aren't showing any signs of letting go any time soon. This country desperately needs positive social reform from top to bottom, and republicanists just don't care. Conservatives have been historically soft on social reform, and quite frankly do not have the tools it takes to make positive reform work. Americas problem with republicanists, and conservatives can be traced back to the almighty dollar. Too much money is being placed in the hands of lobbyists in support of big insurance to pressure the law makers to vote for legislation favoring insurance companies. Law makers that “We The People” voted into office in the first place, and for the most part it has been republicanists who have been letting the lobbyists in. As a result of all these lobbyists waving money under the noses of OUR law makers the constituency is not being represented, and that is why capitalism doesn't work. Until we change this, nothing is going to be done. Another thought. No government on earth in the history of humanity has ever stood against the power of an angry mob.
Love the car keys ad...it would be nice if they would do that, I'm always losing things...
More than likely though I'll just get in trouble for something stupid.

...dumbass 'WHO', not 'that'.
Just thought you might like to know that you have your own share of dumb-assery.
Social reform is in order, but creating more bureaucratic systems to administer my money in larger proportions is not the answer. Freedom and the rights in our constitution are the answer. This is not a republican or democrat government, we have both, and currently the democratic party has two of the three branches of federal government in its control. You can't blame Bush for FISA regardless of how much you want to believe it is his fault somehow. The only people we can blame for our government is ourselves. We elected them, the majority doesn't even vote in this country and generally speaking the demographic of voters are much older than average and have much higher income brackets. And of those voters they are split between rep, dem. and ind. but even the independents vote for one of the two major parties. Our lack of breaking down the two party system is why we have an abusive intrusive and and unresponsive government. Get out and vote, and if there is no one in office worth voting for run yourself.

Dumb*ss? Wikipedia's well-written and concise article (as of 3:44 PM (CDT), August 27, 2008) just proves the point. "The provisions of the Act granting immunity to the complicit telecoms create a roadblock for a number of lawsuits intended to expose and thwart the alleged abuses of power and illegal activities of the federal government since and before the September 11th attacks." This basically means: The Bush administration is covering their own dumb*sses from Constitutional lawsuits.
